Korean Currency Reorganization Project

Japanese: 朝鮮貨幣整理事業 - ちょうせんかへいせいりじぎょう

Based on the First Japan-Korea Agreement of 1904, Megata Tanetaro, a Korean financial advisor, carried out a project to issue new currency and collect old currency. Megata closed the Treasury Bureau, prohibiting Korea from issuing its own currency, while giving the Korean branch of Japan's First Bank the role of central bank, and putting it in charge of the national treasury and issuing notes. He made the First Bank notes issued since 1902 legal tender without restriction, allowed Japanese currency to be used without restriction, and issued new coins of the same fineness and weight as the old coins. On the other hand, from July 1905, he collected the cupronickel leaf coins (commonly known as Chongping Tongbao), which were native Korean currency (see [Korea] in the <Currency> entry).

1904年の第1次日韓協約にもとづき目賀田種太郎韓国財政顧問が行った新貨幣発行･旧貨幣回収事業。目賀田は典圜（てんえん）局閉鎖によって朝鮮独自の貨幣発行を禁ずる一方，日本の第一銀行韓国支店に中央銀行的役割を担わせ，国庫，発券業務を担当させた。1902年以来発行されていた第一銀行券を無制限法貨とし，日本貨幣の無碍（むげ）通用を認め，かつ同貨幣と同品位同量目の新貨を発行した。他方，05年7月から朝鮮在来貨幣である白銅貨の葉銭(常平通宝の通称)の回収を行った(〈貨幣〉の項の[朝鮮]参照)。
