Tachihara Suiken

Japanese: 立原翠軒 - たちはらすいけん
Tachihara Suiken

A Confucian scholar of the Mito Domain in the late Edo period. His given name was Yorozu, his pen name was Hakuji, and he was commonly known as Jingorō. His pen names were Tohri, Shikundō, and after he retired he became Suiken. His father was a Mito Domain retainer, Tachihara Yutaka (pen name Rankei). He studied under Tanaka Konan and Ouchi Yuji of the Sorai school. In 1766 (Meiwa 3), he was appointed editor of the Shokokan, but was treated poorly by the Zhu Xi school as a heretic. In 1786 (Tenmei 6), he was promoted to the position of Konandoyaku (minor storehouse officer) and was appointed president of the Shokokan. From 1797 (Kansei 9), he clashed with his disciple Fujita Yukoku over the compilation policy of the Dai Nihonshi (Great History of Japan), and in 1803 (Kyowa 3), he was ordered to retire and resign as president. During this time, he devoted himself to the revision of the Dai Nihonshi, and made a great contribution by creating the definitive edition. He also had a strong interest in the Ezo issue, and in 1887 he submitted a petition to the senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu about the "three great troubles of the world," explaining the threat of Russia. His works include Seizan Ibun (Nishiyama Ibun), Narayazazuwa (Narabayashi Zatsuwa), Kaibo Shusetsu (Colonial Defense Collection), and Kokundo Bunshu (Konokundo Bunshu). He was also known as a skilled calligrapher.
