Tachikawa [city] - Tachikawa

Japanese: 立川[市] - たちかわ
Tachikawa [city] - Tachikawa
A city located in the Musashino Plateau in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central city area was the castle site of the Tachikawa clan, one of the seven clans of Musashi in the Middle Ages, a key location on the Kamakura Kaido road, and a post town on the Koshu Kaido road in the early modern period. Since an army airfield was established in 1922, it has rapidly developed, and during World War II it was a center of aircraft production. It is served by the Chuo Line and Seibu Haijima Line, and the Ome Line and Nambu Line branch off from it, making it a commercial and residential city that is at the center of the Tama area. Electrical equipment and transportation equipment industries are active here. The area around the airfield became a US military base after World War II, and there were many base issues, such as the Sunagawa Incident from 1955 to 1957, but it was returned in its entirety in 1977. The former site is now a Ground Self-Defense Force garrison, a wide-area disaster prevention base, and Showa Memorial Park (1983). 24.36 km2 . 179,668 people (2010).
