Abbreviation for Ethniki Organosis Kypriakou Agonos (Ethnic Organisation of the Fighting Cyprus). 80% of the Cypriot population is of Greek descent, and after World War II they launched a movement for return to Greece (Enosis movement) in resistance to British rule. Eoka was an anti-British, anti-Communist militant group that promoted this. When Cyprus gained independence in 1959, they began terrorism against Turkish residents, and staged a coup in 1974.
