White clove (White clove) - White clove

Japanese: ハクチョウゲ(白丁花) - ハクチョウゲ
White clove (White clove) - White clove
An evergreen shrub of the Rubiaceae family native to China. It is planted as a garden tree, and although it loses its leaves in cold regions, it is resistant to pruning, so it is used as a hedge or to border flower beds. It has narrow, elliptical leaves about 2 cm long, arranged in opposite pairs. Some varieties have leaves with marginal mottling. The flowers appear in the leaf axils in June and July, and are funnel-shaped, about 1 cm long, with five lobes at the end, and are white or pale purple. There are also double-flowered and double-flowered varieties. A similar species, Danchouge, has closely spaced internodes and densely packed leaves less than 1 cm long. Both are propagated by cuttings.
