An emerging industrial city in the state of Bolivar in eastern Venezuela. Population 453,000 (1990). It is an artificial city founded in 1961 near the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni rivers. It was designated a priority area for the industrial development policy promoted by the Betancourt administration, and the government established steel and aluminum industries here, utilizing iron ore from the Bolivar and El Pao mines and hydroelectric power from a tributary of the Orinoco River, and also developed petrochemicals using oil resources from the neighboring area.
