Ciudad Guayana (English spelling)

An emerging industrial city in the state of Bolivar in eastern Venezuela. Population 453,000 (1990). It is an artificial city founded in 1961 near the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni rivers. It was designated a priority area for the industrial development policy promoted by the Betancourt administration, and the government established steel and aluminum industries here, utilizing iron ore from the Bolivar and El Pao mines and hydroelectric power from a tributary of the Orinoco River, and also developed petrochemicals using oil resources from the neighboring area. Ore is also shipped from the river port.

ベネズエラ東部，ボリーバル州の新興工業都市。人口45万3000(1990)。1961年オリノコ，カロニ両川の合流点付近に創設された人工的な都市である。ベタンクール政権が推進した産業開発政策の重点地域に指定され，政府はここにボリーバル鉱山とエル･パオ鉱山の鉄鉱，オリノコ川支流の水力発電を利用して製鉄業やアルミ工業を創設するとともに，隣接地域の石油資源で石油化学を興した。河港から鉱石の積出しも行われる。
