Hirohata

A district of Himeji City in southern Hyogo Prefecture. Formerly Hirohata Town. Located in the delta on the right bank of the Yumesaki River. Sanyo Electric Railway Aboshi Line and National Route 250 pass through the area. The area south of the Sanyo Electric Railway was new rice fields in the early modern period, and was once a purely agricultural area, but it underwent a major transformation with the construction of the Hirohata Steelworks of Nippon Steel Corporation (now Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metal Corporation) in 1937 (Showa 12). With the construction of company housing, farmland was converted into residential land, and this became even more pronounced after World War II. In 2003 (Heisei 15), the Hirohata district was designated an "Environmental and Recycling Economic Special Zone" as a special zone for structural reform, and has begun operating as a base for creating environmental industries.

兵庫県南部、姫路市の一地区。旧広畑町。夢前(ゆめさき)川右岸の三角州に位置する。山陽電鉄網干(あぼし)線、国道250号が通じる。山陽電鉄以南は近世の新田で、かつては純農村地帯であったが、1937年（昭和12）日本製鉄（現、新日鉄住金）広畑製鉄所の建設で大きく変貌(へんぼう)した。社宅建設とともに農地の宅地化が進み、第二次世界大戦後はいっそう顕著となった。2003年（平成15）広畑地区は構造改革特区として「環境・リサイクル経済特区」の認定を受け、環境産業創出拠点としての活動を開始している。
