An architectural term derived from the Greek word meaning tension or tautness. A slight bulge or protuberance added to the shaft of a column in Greek architecture. Visually, adding entasis to the shaft of a column softens the column's rigidity while also creating a sense of tension in response to the weight of the building above. In Greek architecture, this is most evident in Doric columns, and can also be seen to a lesser extent in the shafts of Ionic and Corinthian columns. Entasis was later often used in columns of Roman and Renaissance architecture, but in Japanese architecture, examples can be seen in the wooden columns of the Great South Gate of Horyu-ji Temple and the Golden Hall of Toshodaiji Temple.
