Okehampton - Okehampton

...There are many Bronze Age ruins, and in the Middle Ages it was important as a royal forest and a tin producing area, but today it has a desolate treeless landscape, where sheep and foals graze and granite and china clay are mined. Okehampton at the northern end is the commercial and tourist center, and Princetown in the center has a prison built in 1806 to house French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars. It was designated a national park in 1951.
