A chipped stone tool in the shape of a stone axe. It can be used for a variety of purposes, including as a cutting tool, woodworking tool, or earth digging tool. In Japan, along with stone arrowheads and stone spoons, it was a common stone tool in the Jomon period. Some of them survive into the Yayoi period. Based on function and form, they can be broadly divided into two types: straight-edged axes, which were used like hand axes and were distributed in Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto during the early to middle Jomon period, and other chipped stone axes used as earth digging tools. Based on their planar shape, chipped stone axes can be divided into rectangular, short-edged, mallet-shaped, with a blade 1.5 times wider than the base, and double-headed, weight-shaped, with large gouges on both central edges.
