Weasel's Tail - Weasel's Tail

Japanese:
Weasel's Tail - Weasel's Tail

A species of moss in the Cupressaceae family. It prefers humid places and forms large colonies on humus soil in mountain forests. The stem is 5-10 cm tall, and the lower half is covered with brown rhizoids. The leaves are dense, with the largest at about 1 cm long, located in the middle of the stem. The leaves are long and linear, with pointed tips, and the midvein reaches the tip of the leaf. The sporophyte has a 3-4 cm stalk, and the capsule is cylindrical and grows almost horizontally. The leaves may turn brown from autumn to winter, but in spring new leaves are formed at the tip of the stem and turn beautiful green. It is called "weasel tail" because the shape of the plant resembles an animal's tail, but it is also called "hinoki moss" because it resembles the shape of a cypress tree. It is commonly found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. This species is important in moss gardening and is usually used in moss gardens, particularly at Saihoji Temple (Moss Temple) in Kyoto, where this moss grows all over both sides of the temple from the entrance to the front gate. In recent years, it is also often used in moss bonsai and moss pots. Moisture control is important in cultivation, and it is necessary to keep the air humidity high.
