Located in the southeast of Australia, across Bass Strait from Victoria, Tasmania is an island that makes up the state of Tasmania, including King Island and Flinders Island. The main part of the island is a dissected plateau, with the highest point at 1,617m above sea level. Cultivation of barley, beans, apples, and hops, and livestock farming of sheep and cattle are thriving on the island, and it is blessed with mineral resources such as zinc, copper, lead, and gold, as well as hydroelectric resources. Tasman arrived in 1642, and it became a British colony in 1803 and statehood in 1901. Its capital is Hobart. ^Area : 63,447 km2. Population: 495,354 (2011). It is known for the extinction of the indigenous Tasmanians at the end of the 19th century. The natural environment and limestone cave ruins (older than 20,000 years ago), which still retain their temperate rainforest, were registered as a World Heritage Site (combined natural and cultural heritage) in 1982 and 1989.
