An old, customary Japanese unit of length. It is based on the size of two outstretched arms. The origin of the word comes from measuring something like a rope with both hands, using two hands to spread it out. It is used in expressions such as "Yahirodono" (eight fathoms) and "Chihirononawa" (a thousand fathoms of rope). Although it is a unit unique to Japan, the character for "hiro" comes from the Chinese classic "Shuowen" (the book of the Chinese Classics), which says, "The two arms of a man are eight fathoms long." However, it has not been used in China since the Zhou dynasty. In Japan, it has continued to be used even after the adoption of the system of length, shaku, and sun, and the external dimensions of graves in the Taika era's "Edict of Thin Burials" are also expressed in hiro. Since hiro was used exclusively at sea, a decree from the Dajokan in 1872 (Meiji 5) established it as six shaku (about 1.818 meters) and unified it with the ken (room on land).
