Covering - Carrying

Japanese:
Covering - Carrying
Also called kazuki or kinukazuki. From the Heian period onwards, hitoe (single layer of clothing) was worn by women of noble and samurai families when going out. The word kazuki means to wear on the head, and the word kaki is used because it is a garment worn over the head. From the 11th century onwards, it became common for women to not show their faces when going out, and images of women wearing kimono (kinu) with the hem tucked up (suso-kazuki) or kimono-kazuki with the kimono tucked up over their head are depicted in the Senmen Koshakyo Katsue (Sketches of Old Sutras), and in the 13th century, kaki and tsuboshozoku meant travelling attire. Later, kosode-kazuki, in which kosode was worn over a short sleeve, appeared instead of kaki, and as kosode became outerwear and formal wear, it also became the outing attire of the wealthy private classes in the second half of the 16th century. In "Once Upon a Time in the Past," it is written that "Until the time of the Meireki era, the Harimyo-koshimoto-kasuki was worn, but from the Manji era, it was called Kazuki-suki in Edo, and this practice ceased after the great fire of the Year of the Rooster." Also, in "Kiyu Shoran," it is written that "In the past, it does not appear to have been made into a separate kasuki as in later times. It was probably originally worn as everyday clothing." Since the Meiji era, it has been worn by the general public on celebratory occasions.
