90% of the population is native African, divided into 28 tribes, including the Mande. The remaining 8% are Americo-Liberians, the descendants of former freed slaves, and there are also whites from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain, and Germany, primarily Americans. There are also Lebanese engaged in commerce, and Ghanaians and others have come to work.
