Herbert of Cherbury

Herbert of Cherbury

...In the late 17th century, with the development of civil society and the rise of natural science, the theology of rationalism was a heresy that rejected the traditional doctrines of the Church of England through the penetration of rational speculation, rejected the Trinity, revelation, and miracles, and adopted a symbolic and metaphorical interpretation of the Bible. The tenets of rationalism, which reconcile religion with reason, were first formulated by the 17th century philosopher Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648) and used by Shaftesbury (3rd Earl) as a basis for the rejection and criticism of fanaticism, but it was not until the publication of Toland's Christianity Is Not Mystical in 1696 that the so-called Deism Controversy broke out, which was the occasion for the attack by Church of England apologists on the publication of Toland's Christianity Is Not Mystical. Representative deists who appeared in this debate include Matthew Tindal (1653/57-1733) of Christianity as Old as the Creation (1730), John Anthony Collins (1676-1729) of On Free Thought (1713), and Bolingbroke, a leading politician and writer of the time.
