In Japan, it grows on Iriomote Island, but in tropical areas, it is an evergreen fern of the family Polytrichum (illustration), which grows in colonies in sunny areas such as mountain ridges. There are several closely related species. The rhizome reaches the thickness of a thumb, creeps long, is lanceolate, and bears hard, dark brown scales. The petiole reaches 1.5 m, is hard, and bears scales at the base. The leaves are simple, but are divided into two lobes down the middle, and each lobe is deeply incised so that it splits into two halves. Larger leaves have a slightly wider circular surface, 80 cm in diameter.

日本では西表（いりおもて）島に生ずるが，熱帯で山地の尾根筋などの日向に群生するヤブレガサウラボシ科の常緑性のシダ（イラスト）。近縁のものに数種がある。根茎は親指の太さに達し，長くはい，披針形で暗褐色の硬い鱗片をつける。葉柄は1.5mに達し，硬く，基部に鱗片をつける。葉は単葉であるが，中央で2裂し，それぞれの裂片が，半分さらに半分と分かれるように深く切れ込む。葉面は大きいものでは直径80cmのやや横に広い円形となる。
