An oratorio composed by Handel in 1741. With a libretto created by Jennens based on both the Old and New Testaments, it depicts the prophecy of Christ's birth and resurrection. It is composed of three parts: the first part deals with prophecy and the birth, the second with the Passion and Atonement, and the third with the Resurrection and eternal life. "Messiah" is the English pronunciation of the Hebrew "Messiah" and is usually translated as "Savior". The dramatic effect and deep religious emotion of this work have touched the hearts of many people since its premiere, and it is still counted as one of the most popular religious music pieces today. The "Hallelujah Chorus" that closes the second part is especially beloved, and there is a famous story that King George II was so moved that he stood up at this part during the London premiere. The piece is composed of four soloists, a mixed chorus, and an orchestra. It was premiered in Dublin, Ireland in 1942, the year after it was composed, and was subsequently extensively altered by the composer.
