1897‐1981 John Bagot Glubb was a British soldier who became a high-ranking official in the Jordanian government. He was an Arab-speaking soldier and writer. He served in Iraq and Jordan from 1920 onwards, and for nearly 20 years he lived without meeting any Europeans. In 1939 he became commander-in-chief of the Arab Legion in Transjordan, and led the corps in the occupation of the West Bank during the First Arab-Israeli War (1948-49).
