...These scion and seed orchards supply cuttings and seeds for afforestation, but because Japan's elite trees are selected for their phenotypes, next generation test forests are also created to confirm whether their superiority is genetic, and the results are used to improve the scion and seed orchards. The weather damage resistance breeding project selects trees that are highly resistant to snow damage, frost damage, and cold wind damage, and uses these to create genetically superior trees. In the case of snow damage resistance, trees with minimal damage are selected from areas with severe damage, poor environments, and damaged areas of forests where varieties and strains thought to be resistant were test planted in heavy snowfall areas (average maximum snow depth of 250 cm or more), heavy snowfall areas (average maximum snow depth of 120 to 250 cm), and other areas.
