Athlete. Born in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from Yamaguchi High School and the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto Imperial University. While still a student, he made his debut at the 10th Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 (Showa 7), where he placed 6th in the long jump. At the 11th Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, he won the triple jump and placed 3rd in the long jump, winning both a gold and a bronze medal. His triple jump record of 16 meters stood as the world record for 15 years, until it was broken by just 1 centimeter by Brazilian athlete Adhemar da Silva in 1951 (Showa 26). He served as a permanent member of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and a managing director of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, and was awarded the Medal with Blue Ribbon in 1963.
