Naoto Tajima

Athlete. Born in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from Yamaguchi High School and the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto Imperial University. While still a student, he made his debut at the 10th Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 (Showa 7), where he placed 6th in the long jump. At the 11th Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, he won the triple jump and placed 3rd in the long jump, winning both a gold and a bronze medal. His triple jump record of 16 meters stood as the world record for 15 years, until it was broken by just 1 centimeter by Brazilian athlete Adhemar da Silva in 1951 (Showa 26). He served as a permanent member of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and a managing director of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, and was awarded the Medal with Blue Ribbon in 1963.

陸上競技の選手。山口県岩国市生まれ。山口高等学校、京都帝国大学経済学部卒業。在学中の1932年（昭和7）のオリンピック第10回ロサンゼルス大会に初出場し、走幅跳びで6位入賞。1936年のオリンピック第11回ベルリン大会では三段跳びで優勝、走幅跳びでも3位となり、金・銅メダルを獲得した。このときの三段跳び16メートルの記録は、1951年（昭和26）にブラジルのアデマール・ダ・シルバ選手がわずか1センチメートル破るまで15年間も世界記録として輝いた大記録である。日本オリンピック委員会（JOC）常任委員、日本陸上競技連盟常務理事などを務め、1963年藍綬(らんじゅ)褒章を受けた。
