1863‐1949
An American Northern Methodist missionary, linguist, and historian. His Korean name was Jokbo. He was born in Vermont and graduated from Dartmouth College. In 1886 he was invited to teach at the Korean national school, Yueikoin, where he remained until 1891. In 1893 he returned to Korea to work in missionary work, and in 1901 he founded the Korean Review. He took an anti-Japanese stance, and in 1905 he delivered a personal letter from Emperor Gojong to the US President, and in 1907 he assisted Gojong in sending a secret emissary to the International Peace Conference in The Hague (The Hague Secret Emissary Incident).

アメリカの北メソディスト派宣教師，言語学者，歴史学者。朝鮮名は轄甫。バーモント州に生まれ，ダートマス大学を卒業。1886年朝鮮の官立学校〈育英公院〉の教師として招聘され91年まで在職。93年再び朝鮮に渡り，宣教事業に従事し，1901年には《コリアン･レビュー》を創刊した。反日的立場をとり，05年皇帝高宗のアメリカ大統領あて親書をもたらし，07年には高宗のハーグ万国平和会議への密使派遣を援助した(ハーグ密使事件)。
