1863‐1949 An American Northern Methodist missionary, linguist, and historian. His Korean name was Jokbo. He was born in Vermont and graduated from Dartmouth College. In 1886 he was invited to teach at the Korean national school, Yueikoin, where he remained until 1891. In 1893 he returned to Korea to work in missionary work, and in 1901 he founded the Korean Review. He took an anti-Japanese stance, and in 1905 he delivered a personal letter from Emperor Gojong to the US President, and in 1907 he assisted Gojong in sending a secret emissary to the International Peace Conference in The Hague (The Hague Secret Emissary Incident).
