A coelenterate (Cnidaria) of the family Scutellaria in the class Hydrozoa. It is found from central Honshu southwards, attaching to rocks on the seabed at depths of several metres. It forms yellowish brown to dark brown, feathery colonies 10-30cm tall. Branches sprout out on the same plane from a single trunk, and many twigs grow alternately from the trunk and each branch. Each twig is regularly divided into nodes, and each node bears a hydropod. The hydropod is shaped like a teapot, attached to the stem on the back, with a mouth that opens diagonally upwards and three teeth on either side of the mouth rim and one on the back.
