Tajik people - Tajik (English spelling)

Tajik people - Tajik (English spelling)
An Iranian ethnic group in Central Asia. In Russian, they are called Tadzhik. Currently, they have a population of about 3.8 million in the former Soviet Union, including Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan, and more than 5 million in Afghanistan, Iran, and other areas. Their history dates back to the Iranian tribes that migrated from the Eurasian steppes and settled in Central Asia from the end of the 2nd millennium BCE to the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE, and they established their own culture in the oases of Sogd, Khwarezm, and Bactria. The term Tajik was originally a medieval Persian word referring to a tribe of Arabs, but when the above regions were conquered by Arab Muslims in the 7th and 8th centuries and the indigenous Iranian inhabitants converted to Islam, the Turks of Central Asia began to call them Tajiks, and eventually they also began to refer to themselves as Tajiks to the Turks.
