Japanese: カシパン

A general term for sea urchins in the Echinodermata suborder Polypora. The shell is rounded and pentagonal, resembling a sweet bun or a large biscuit, hence the name. It is densely covered with short spines. It has a small genital opening at the top of the dorsal surface, a mouth in the center of the ventral surface, and anus halfway between the mouth and the rear end. The four-spotted polypora is reddish brown and about 5 cm in diameter and 0.7 cm in height. It is commonly found on the sandy bottom of shallow seas from Sagami Bay to Kyushu and along the coast of the Sea of Japan. Other species include the staghorn polypora and the shallow polypora.

棘皮動物カシパン亜目のウニ類の総称。殻は丸みを帯びた五角形で，菓子パンまたは大きいビスケットに似るのでこの名がある。短いとげが全面に密生。背面の頂部に小さい生殖口，腹面の中央に口，口と後端の中間に肛門がある。ヨツアナカシパンは赤褐色で直径5cm，高さ0.7cmくらい。相模湾から九州，日本海沿岸の浅海の砂底に普通。このほか，ハスノハカシパン，スカシカシパン等がある。
