Louis Majorelle

1859‐1926
A furniture maker representing the French Art Nouveau style. Born in Nancy as the son of a cabinet maker who produced 18th-century style furniture. He trained as a painter under J.F. Millet in Paris, but returned to Nancy to take over the family business after his father's death. Inspired by Gallé's Art Nouveau furniture of the 1880s, he turned to full-scale furniture production in the new style in 1900, and achieved success. His works lack the fantasy of Gallé's, but are outstanding for their graceful curves and intricate sculptural decoration.

フランスのアール･ヌーボー様式を代表する家具作家。ナンシーで18世紀の様式の家具を製作する家具師の子として生まれる。パリでJ.F.ミレーのもとで画家の修業をしたが，父の死によりナンシーに戻り家業を継ぐ。1880年代におけるガレのアール･ヌーボー様式の家具に刺激をうけて，1900年には本格的に新様式の家具製作に転向して成功した。彼の作品はガレに比べて幻想性に欠けるが，流麗な曲線の造形と彫刻装飾の精巧さの点で傑出している。
