...the translation of "commendatio" generally refers to the act of entrusting one's body to the protection and control of another person and establishing a relationship of dominance and submission between them, but it is particularly relevant in relation to the act of establishing a lord-vassal relationship in European feudalism. That is, the establishment of a lord-vassal relationship was carried out by the vassal going to the lord, making an oath of good faith (fidelitas), placing both hands together, and the lord enveloping the vassal's hands with his own. The word "entrustment" does not include the oath of good faith, but only refers to the ritual of submission by hand-over-hand.
