A butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, order Lepidoptera, class Insecta. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu (including Tsushima), and is rare in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, but is commonly seen in areas south of Hokkaido up to Kyushu. It is not distributed in Tanegashima, Yakushima, or the southwestern islands. It is found in the Korean Peninsula and China, and is endemic to East Asia. The wingspan is about 70 mm. The wings are white or yellowish white with black markings, but the development of the black markings varies depending on the sex and the season of emergence. In cold regions, it emerges once a year (July), and in warm regions, it emerges twice a year (May-June, July-August), and a partial third generation may emerge in September and October. Adults fly through forests and gather in large numbers on tree sap, but do not visit flowers. The larvae feed on plants such as Chinese hackberry and Japanese hackberry, which are members of the elm family. They overwinter as larvae.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。北海道より九州（対馬(つしま)を含む）にかけて分布、北海道では南西部に局部的に産し、まれであるが、以南の地方では九州まで普通にみられる。種子島(たねがしま)、屋久島(やくしま)およびそれ以南の南西諸島には分布しない。外国では朝鮮半島、中国に産し、東アジアの特産種。はねの開張は70ミリメートル内外。はねは白色ないし黄白地の地色に黒色の斑紋(はんもん)があるが、黒色の斑紋の発達程度は雌雄や出現の季節によって変化に富む。寒冷地では年1回の発生（7月）、暖地では年2回（5～6月、7～8月）の発生、部分的な第3化が9、10月に羽化することがある。成虫は林地を飛び樹液に多く集まるが花にはこない。幼虫の食草はニレ科植物のエノキ、エゾエノキなど。越冬態は幼虫である。
