A perennial plant of the fern family Pterygotae with shoehorn-shaped leaves (illustration). When Tomitaro Makino was visiting the Tarunotaki waterfall in Kamibun, Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture, he found this plant growing on a rock, hence the name. Evergreen. The rhizome is short, lanceolate, and has brown scales. The leaves grow in clusters of several leaves, and are stalk-like. The leaf blade is oblong, wedge-shaped at the base, blunt or acute at the tip, and thick. The veins are reticulate. The sporangia are found in slightly concave grooves that run long above the veins, forming a reticulate shape and intermingling with lateral threads. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Chiba and Toyama Prefectures, and rarely grows on rocks under forests near rivers.
