In the early days of Japanese economic history, he proposed a unique theory of economic history based on the history of Japanese economic thought. He was born in the Uwajima clan residence in Ryudo-cho, Azabu, Edo. He studied English at Uwajima County Futsuki School in Ehime Prefecture under Nakagamigawa Hikojiro, who was dispatched from Keio Gijuku, and became an English teacher at Wakayama City Jishu School after becoming a graduate of Keio Gijuku. He became a reporter for the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun, and then became interested in the research and application of economics. He studied Japanese economic thought since the Edo period, while also working in land reclamation and as an editor. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he became a professor at Doshisha University, and in 1916, he became a professor at Keio University, where he was in charge of Japanese economic history. He was a council member of the Society for Social and Economic History.
