In contrast, the French Thomas (1158-80?) attempted to take up this legend from the perspective of a courtly chivalric tale based on the free will of the parties involved, to focus on psychological analysis rather than the actions of the protagonist, and to change the role of the love potion to a symbolic one. The Oxford manuscript Tristan the Mad (late 12th century?), the Norwegian monk Robert's Saga (1226), and the German Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan (1205-10?) are all in the same vein as Thomas, and are called the "chivalric system."...
