He participated in the expedition to Goguryeo (Korea) in 645, and after pacifying Baekje (Korea) in 660, he fought against the Japanese army that had been dispatched to support the remnants of Baekje at the mouth of Baekgang River in 663 (Battle of Baekgang River), and defeated them.
