It was incorporated as a city in 1916. Its population was 322,621 (1995). Since the early Jomon period, people have lived along the Yahagi River and the Oto River, and it has long been a key point for land and water transport. In the mid-15th century, Okazaki Castle was built, and in the early modern period, it flourished as a castle town with a land area of 50,000 koku, Okazaki and Fujikawa as post towns on the Tokaido road, and as a river port town for land and water freight on the Yahagi River. In the Meiji period, the town's function as a transportation settlement declined due to the avoidance of the Tokaido Line (opened in 1888), but it regained vitality in 1923 when the Aichi Electric Railway (now the Nagoya Railroad) linking Nagoya and Toyohashi was opened. ...
