[Died] December 21, 1978. Paris. French critic and sociologist. After graduating from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School), he organized the "Social Science Research Society" with G. Bataille, Klossowski and others and began his critical career. While he focused on literature and aesthetics, his field of activity was extremely wide, including the publication of works on theology. In literary criticism, he based his writings on classicism and humanism, and sharply questioned the responsibility of literature. He is also known for editing the magazine Diogène and compiling the series Croix du Sud, which introduced Latin American literature. He is also known for his reevaluation of fantasy literature. His major works include Le Mythe et l'homme (1938), L'Homme et le sacré (Man and the Sacred) (39), Babel (48), Poétique de Saint-John Perse (54), and Les Jeux et les hommes (Play and Men) (57). He was a member of the Académie Française (71).

フランスの批評家，社会学者。エコール・ノルマル・シュペリュール (高等師範学校) 卒業後，G.バタイユ，クロソウスキーらとともに「社会科学研究会」を組織して批評活動に入った。文学，美学などを中心としながらも，神学に関する著作も発表するなど，活動領域はきわめて広範囲に及んでいる。文学批評では古典主義とヒューマニズムに立脚し，文学の責任を鋭く問うている。また『ディオゲネス』 Diogène誌の編集，ラテンアメリカ文学を紹介した『南十字星』 Croix du Sud叢書の編纂などでも著名。幻想文学の再評価でも知られる。主著『神話と人間』 Le Mythe et l'homme (1938) ，『人間と聖なるもの』L'Homme et le sacré (39) ，『バベル』 Babel (48) ，『サン＝ジョン・ペルスの詩法』 Poétique de Saint-John Perse (54) ，『遊びと人間』 Les Jeux et les hommes (57) 。アカデミー・フランセーズ会員 (71) 。
