Japanese:
Takashi Takii - Takashi Takii

Novelist and haiku poet. Born on April 4, 1894, in Takayama, Hida, as the son of a joiner, he initially worked as a clerk at a fish wholesaler. He met Kawahigashi Hekigoto during his nationwide pilgrimage, and after a period in Osaka, he moved to Tokyo. He became involved with new-tendency haiku magazines such as Soun and Kaiko. He became a literary reporter for the Jiji Shimpo, where he got to know Akutagawa Ryunosuke. He then became a reporter for Kaizo, where he got to know Shiga Naoya, and they would spend the rest of their lives together as a respected senior in both literature and life. He moved to Abiko, Chiba, where Shiga lived, and then to Kyoto and Nara. His novel "Infinite Embrace" (1927), which was serialized intermittently with different titles, is famous as a stoic and pure love story centered on his love affair with his first wife, Enomoto Rin, whom he met in a brothel, and her death. He remarried Shinozaki Rin, with the help of the Shiga couple. The story is frankly described in "Until Marriage" (1940). He also wrote a series of "father-themed" works, including "Father." In 1930 (Showa 5), he moved to his wife's hometown of Hachioji, where he lived for the rest of his life. After World War II, he advocated for landscape novels, published "Noshu" (1968, winner of the Yomiuri Literature Prize), and served as a selection committee member for the Akutagawa Prize for many years. He enjoyed fishing and Noh, and showed a unique talent for calligraphy. He also wrote many essays, including "Shiga-san no Seikatsu nado" (1974), which included the selection commentary for the Akutagawa Prize. He published a long novel under different titles between 1969 and 1973, and compiled it as Haikujin Nakama (Haiku Friends) (1973), which won the Japan Literature Grand Prize. In particular, the chapter "My First Woman" is a masterpiece that depicts the innocent interaction with an older geisha in Hida. The distinctive feature of Takii's literature is that he portrays these three women, their families, and their surroundings "as they are" and "as they are" in strong prose like "hand-woven cotton." He went by the pen name Orishiba, and his haiku from Orishiba Kushu (1931) to Yamazakura (1975), which he wrote himself, have both the strength and elegance of Akutagawa's "Shurado" (the way of the asura). He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1959, and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1974. He passed away on November 21, 1984.
