A branch of the Rinzai sect in China, it is one of the Five Houses and Seven Schools. It was founded by Huanglong Huinan, a disciple of Sekishou Ciming, around 1036 during the Jingyou era of the Song dynasty. Huinan got his name from the fact that he lived on Mount Huanglong. The tradition continued for about 150 years before dying out. In Japan, Eisai transmitted the tradition of this branch.
