Virgo Cluster of Galaxy

A galaxy cluster in the constellation Virgo. The distance from Earth to the center of this galaxy cluster is about 60 million light years, and it stretches from 40 to 98 million light years in the depth direction. It is made up of about 1,000 to 2,000 galaxies, and at the center of the cluster is a huge elliptical galaxy called M87. There are almost equal numbers of spiral galaxies and elliptical galaxies in this cluster, and it is thought to be a cluster that is still evolving. Its apparent magnitude is 9.4, and its apparent diameter is about 10 degrees. It is located in the northern part of Virgo, and many galaxies can be seen using a small telescope. It can be seen in the southeastern sky around 7pm in early June, and in the southwestern sky around 9pm.

The Local Supercluster, a huge group of galaxies, is formed around the Virgo Cluster, and the Local Group, to which the Milky Way belongs, is located at the edge of the Local Supercluster. The Local Group is being attracted toward the Virgo Cluster, and is expected to merge with the Virgo Cluster in the future.

おとめ座にある銀河団。地球からこの銀河団中心までの距離は約6000万光年で、奥行き方向に4000万光年から9800万光年まで広がっている。1000個から2000個ほどの銀河で構成されていて、銀河団の中心部にはM87という巨大楕円(だえん)銀河がある。この銀河団では渦巻銀河（渦状(かじょう)銀河）と楕円銀河がほぼ同数あり、まだ進化途上の銀河団と思われる。実視等級は9.4等、視直径は10度程度。おとめ座の北部にあり、小望遠鏡を使うと、たくさんの銀河を見ることができる。6月初旬の午後7時ころには南東の空に、午後9時ころに南西の空に見える。

　おとめ座銀河団を中心に銀河の巨大集団である局部超銀河団が形成されていて、天の川銀河（銀河系）が属する局部銀河群は局部超銀河団のはじに位置している。局部銀河群は、おとめ座銀河団のほうに引かれていて、将来おとめ座銀河団と合体すると思われる。
