Omogo [Village] - Omogo

Japanese: 面河[村] - おもご

A village in Kamiukena County in south-central Ehime Prefecture. Population 1,052 (1995). Located at the source of the Meno River, the village occupies the southern slope of Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in Shikoku. It borders Kochi Prefecture to the southeast. Originally called Somagawa Village, it was renamed Omogo Village in 1934 after the Omogo Valley. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries of the village, and it produces timber, tea, tobacco, shiitake mushrooms, and sericulture is also practiced. The majority of the forest is national forest or forest owned by people outside the village. The northeastern part of the village is designated as Ishizuchi Quasi-National Park, and contains the Omogo Valley. The Ishizuchi Skyline runs through the village, and it is also the back trailhead for Mt. Ishizuchi.

愛媛県中南部，上浮穴（かみうけな）郡の村。人口1052(1995)。面河川の源流域に位置し，村域は四国最高峰の石鎚山南斜面を占める。南東は高知県に接する。もと杣川村と称したが，面河渓にちなんで1934年面河村と改称した。農林業が基幹産業で，木材，茶，タバコ，シイタケなどを産し，養蚕も行われる。山林の過半数は国有林，村外者所有林で占められる。村域北東部は石鎚国定公園に指定され，面河渓(名)がある。石鎚スカイラインが通じ，石鎚山の裏登山口でもある。
