Also called Obutsu-myo (Buddha's name) or Sange (Buddha's name repentance). This is an event where the name of Buddha and the Buddha's name sutra are chanted in order to repent and atone for sins. The names of 3,000 to 100,000 Buddhas who live in the past, present, and future, and in the 10 countries in all, including the eight directions, are chanted and worshipped. In Japan, it is said to have started in the 9th century by Seian, and for three days from December 19th at the Jinjuden Hall of the Imperial Palace and other places, 13,000 images of Buddhas submitted by Kengo were displayed, and a folding screen of hell was set up and chanted. Later, it became an event held in January. It appears in "The Pillow Book," "The Tale of Eiga," and "Ekotoba."
