Euphrōnios

Greek potter and ceramic painter. Active in Athens at the end of the 6th century BCE. Seventeen works remain that bear his signature, of which he painted five. His careful observation of the human body and bold poses with movement show an originality not seen in previous ceramic paintings. Notable works include a red-figure krater depicting the combat between Hercules and Antaeus (Louvre Museum) and a wine goblet depicting a young knight (National Museum of Ancient Art, Munich). ギリシアの陶工，陶画家。前6世紀末にアテナイで活躍。彼の署名のある作品が17点残されており，うち5点に絵付けしている。肉体の克明な観察と，動きのある大胆なポーズをとることによって，従来の陶画に見られなかった斬新さを示した。代表作に，ヘラクレスとアンタイオスの格闘を描いた赤絵式のクラテル(ルーブル美術館)や若い騎士を描いた酒杯(ミュンヘン国立古代美術館)などがある。【前田正明】
