Takamatsu [city] - Takamatsu

Japanese: 高松[市] - たかまつ
Takamatsu [city] - Takamatsu
A city in central Kagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1890 and is the prefectural capital. It faces the Seto Inland Sea, occupies the lower reaches of the Koto River and Kasuga River, and includes the offshore islands of Ogijima and Megijima. The city center is centered on Takamatsu Castle, built by Koma Chikamasa in 1588, and has developed as a castle town of the Matsudaira clan since the Kan'ei era. Since the opening of the Utaka Ferry Route in 1910 (closed in 1988), it has developed as the gateway to Shikoku and the political, economic, and cultural center of the prefecture. Since the completion of the Seto Ohashi Bridge in 1988, coupled with the conversion of Takamatsu Airport into an international airport, its position as the gateway to Shikoku has further increased. The Yosan Line, Kotoku Line, Takamatsu-Kotohira Electric Railway Line, and Takamatsu Expressway run through the city. There are Yashima, Goshikidai, Ritsurin Park, Tamamo Park, the castle ruins (historic site), Gokenzan, Shionoe Onsen, and Kagawa University. Lacquerware, paper, and bonsai are local specialties. In rural areas, rice, vegetables, flowers, and mandarin oranges are cultivated. In September 2005, Shioe Town in Kagawa County was incorporated, and in January 2006, Aji Town, Mure Town, Kagawa Town, Konan Town in Kagawa County, and Kokubunji Town in Ayauta County were incorporated. Area: 375.41 km2 . Population: 419,429 (2010).
