Sanskrit Grammar

In the field of Indian studies, he devoted himself to the study of Vedic studies, especially the Atharva-Veda, and published a complete translation (1855-56) and compiled an index (1881). His Sanskrit Grammar (1879) has been reprinted many times as the most comprehensive Sanskrit grammar written in English, and its supplement, the Verb Conjugation Table (1885), is still an indispensable book for Sanskrit scholars today. In the field of linguistics, he worked on the editing of the Century Dictionary (1889-91), and wrote such works as Languages ​​and Linguistic Studies (1867) and The Life and Growth of Languages ​​(1875).
