It is one of the Amerindian languages spoken in Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia in South America, and is the second most important after Quechua. It belongs to the Tupi family of the Andean-Equatorial languages. Of the approximately 4 million speakers, 3 million live in Paraguay, accounting for 95% of the country's population. It is the national language of Paraguay and is also used in some education systems.
