A cutting tool used in chipping work, where metal or rock is chipped by the striking action of a hammer. It can be considered the equivalent of a woodworking chisel. A flat chisel is used for cutting and chipping flat surfaces, while a flat chisel is used for rough cutting and cutting grooves (see figure). The angle at which the blade is placed is an important factor, and should be 60 to 70 degrees for steel, 40 to 60 degrees for brass, bronze, and cast iron, and around 30 degrees for white metal. Caulking chisels are used for setting rivets, and for carving corners, corners, and asymmetrical parts that cannot be machined. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
