A town in Shioya County in central eastern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies a plateau on the east bank of the midstream Kinu River. Its center is Hoshakuji, where the Tohoku Main Line and Karasuyama Line junction. In addition to producing rice, the town also cultivates field crops and fruit. Many people commute to Utsunomiya City. The Imperial Household Agency's Imperial Ranch is located in the south. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 70.87 km2 . 栃木県中東部,塩谷(しおや)郡の町。鬼怒(きぬ)川中流東岸の台地部を占める。中心は宝積寺(ほうしゃくじ)で,東北本線と烏山線の分岐点。米を産するほか,畑作,果樹栽培も行う。宇都宮市への通勤者が多い。南部に宮内庁御料牧場がある。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。70.87km2。3万436人(2010)。
