Takane [village] - Takane

Japanese: 高根[村] - たかね
Takane [village] - Takane
A village in Ono County, northeastern Gifu Prefecture. Population 856 (1995). It is a mountain village occupying the southern foot of Mt. Norikura and the northern foot of Mt. Ontake, and many rivers originate in the village's foothills and flow into the Masuda River (upstream of the Hida River). To the east, the village borders Nagano Prefecture, separated by the steep Hida Mountains, with Nomugi Pass on the prefectural border. The Kiso Highway (currently National Route 361), which connects Takayama and Kiso Fukushima, runs through the village, and it flourished as a post town before the opening of the Takayama Main Line. Its main industries are agriculture and forestry, and settlements are scattered around the Masuda River basin and the Hiwada Plateau. The completion of Takane Dam in 1970 has led to the development of the plateau region into a tourist destination.
