This museum is located northwest of Midan Ettahrir (Liberation Square) in the center of Cairo, the capital of Egypt. It was founded in 1851 and its first director was French archaeologist A. Mariette. It was originally located in Boulaq and called the Boulaq Museum. In 1902 it moved to its current location and changed its name to Cairo Museum. It has a collection of approximately 100,000 artifacts from Egyptian culture, from prehistoric times to the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, and Greco-Roman periods.
