A city in southern Norway. It is located on the south shore at the mouth of the Boknafjord, the southernmost of the fjords that stretch along the west coast of the country. It has a population of 110,062 (2002). In the center of the town, there is a Norman-style church built in the 12th century, an open-air market, narrow cobblestone streets, and other old streetscapes. Surrounding this are port facilities related to fishing and trade, industrial areas, and residential areas. The main industries are fish canning and shipbuilding. When natural gas and oil fields were discovered on the bottom of the North Sea, the excellent shipbuilding technology and the deep waters of the fjords led to the development of an industry for the construction of platforms for oil drilling and storage. The western town of Sola has a supply base for materials to the North Sea oil fields, an airport, and an oil refinery, attracting many people involved in the oil industry. As a result, the population of the North Jären district, centered around Stavanger, has rapidly increased.
