A powerful warrior in medieval Shinano. A relative of the Inoue clan of the Seiwa Genji. Founded by Morimitsu, the family split into Hongo Takanashi (the head family) and Yamada Takanashi early on. The area around Takanashi in present-day Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture is said to be the main family home, and the family had territories in both Takai and Minauchi counties. Tadanao, the third generation from Morimitsu, was known as one of the four heavenly kings of Kiso Yoshinaka, and at the end of the Kamakura period, one of his clan members was Sekizan Egen, the founder of Myoshinji Temple in Kyoto. During the Nanboku-cho period, Tsuneyoshi was active militarily as the head of the family, and the family continued to expand its territories into northern Shinano throughout the Muromachi period.
