Lilium longiflorum - Lilium longiflorum

Japanese: ヤブラン - やぶらん
Lilium longiflorum - Lilium longiflorum

An evergreen perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). Its leaves grow in clusters from a short, thick rhizome. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, 50 cm long, about 1 cm wide, rounded at the tip, dark green, and slanting downward at the top. From summer to autumn, the flower stalk is erect, 30 to 50 cm long, and produces spikes of pale purple flowers, 0.6 cm in diameter. It has six perianths and six stamens. The bare seeds of the fruit ripen to a dark purple color. It grows under trees from Honshu to Okinawa. It is used as a ground cover plant in public gardens. In addition, varieties with pale yellow-white stripes on the leaves are often used to border flower beds, and these can also be grown in pots for decoration. It is propagated by division in spring and autumn.
